Helpful Hints: Creating Interest Areas
Setting up interest areas with in the classroom is important for
the making of a classroom that promotes the growth and development for a child.
Here are areas that are typically in an early childhood classroom:
• Blocks (unit blocks, people and transportation)
• Dramatic Play (kitchen set, dress-up clothes & dolls)
• Fine Motor or Manipulative (tables, puzzles, pegs & beads)
• Art (easels, paint, crayons & paper)
• Sand & Water (sand and water table, funnels, measuring cups & sponges)
• Library (book display, books & soft cushions)
• Music and Movement (dance/prop storage, musical instruments/players)
• Storage for Personal Belongings (lockers, storage bins, etc.)

Helpful Hints:
Art and Children with Special Needs
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)
Typically a child with ADHD can focus on an activity for period of time with assistance.
Allow exploration of the art area and encourage an activity such as cutting & pasting.
Giving positive enforcement and allowing them to choose their own activity helps them to stay on task.
Visual Impaired
Focusing on a child's abilities, rather than their disability is especially important for child with a visual impairment.
Visual impairment does not necessarily mean that a child is 100% impaired.
They may be able to make out shapes or shadows. Supplying materials that are colorful or have a defined shape
allows the child to distinguish between objects. Clay or play-dough will allow the child to use their other senses.
Cerebral Palsy
Using materials that will help a child with Cerebral Palsy easily form shapes such as clay or play dough will help
them to express their creative side. Using pre-cut shapes and colors will also encourage their skill development.
